With dozens of marinas dotted through the area, thousands of slips available and an endless supply of keen local knowledge there’s no better place to start your boating adventure. Denizens of this pleasant town agree. With approximately 54,000 recreational boats registered to residents of Pinellas County as a whole this area is the second-biggest boating community in Florida.
The best option for boaters looking to explore Tampa Bay is to head to the Safety Harbor City Marina, a 44-slip facility with a boat ramp and fishing pier, or to check out the range of private marinas and jetties that line the shore here. Boating in Clearwater really comes into its own on the west-side of the city. Right next to bustling Downtown you will find the Clearwater Harbor Marina, a public facility with 135-slips, while just to the north there is the Clearwater Tides Marina, where 90 wet slips and two dozen boat lifts await. Just outside the city limits there is the large Dunedin Marina, a 150-slip facility in an artificial harbor with hundreds of dry storage spaces. There’s also a slew of large marinas in Clearwater’s northern suburbs, such as the Port Tarpon Marina, Home Port Marina in Palm Harbor, and the 150-slip Marker 1 Marina, all ideally placed for ambitious trips to Three Rooker Island, a popular weekend sandbar destination beloved by party-goers.
Yet some of the most inviting docking points in this area can be discovered on the other side of the Clearwater Memorial Causeway, where a range of sandy barrier islands and man-made islets hide a wide range of facilities. Along with a range of resort marinas, private harbors, publicly-accessible boat slips and floating piers you will also encounter the Island Yacht Club, located next to the must-visit city Aquarium, the 50-slip Clearwater Beach Marina and the exclusive Clearwater Yacht Club, a mainstay of sophisticated yachting since 1911 with an impressive 135-slips. If you prefer a quieter, more rugged boating experience then head north up the Sound to the Caladesi Island State Park marina, an isolated retreat on a wilderness refuge surrounded by dunes and crystal-clear waters with 108 wet-slips sheltered from the tides.
Clearwater welcomes races and regattas year-round, with the Clearwater Offshore National held in September each year the highlight of the city’s maritime calendar. The boating industry in Clearwater is focused around marine services and dock builders, but the city is also home to the well-known boat-building firm Hutchins Co, as well as their popular sailing subsidiary Com-Pac Yachts.
