Located on a peninsula on a peninsula, with two distinct coastlines facing estuarine and oceanic waters, St. Pete’s is a veritable yachter’s paradise. In fact, Pinellas County as a whole, which includes the city of St. Petersburg, is the second-largest recreational boating community in the state with around 54,000 vessels registered to residents here. Boaters in this city can share the waters with feeding manatees and dolphins scouring the shallow sea-grass beds of Tampa Bay, island hop their way down to mysterious Egmont Key and windswept Fort de Soto, or hunt down the Gulf’s biggest marlin and mahi-mahi offshore.
Four huge marinas flank St. Pete’s exciting and attractive Downtown district, putting you within walking distance of charming parks, glassy towers, vibrant restaurants and historic attractions. The City Municipal Marina, St. Petersburg’s busiest, is split between two facilities at the South Yacht Basin and the Central Yacht Basin, separated by a waterfront park, that between them offer 640 wet-slips open to the public. A short distance to the north there is the Vinoy Marina, a full-service harbor with 74 fixed slips in a handsome resort setting steps away from the city’s Museum of Fine Arts. Another large destination in this area is the Harborage Marina at Bayboro, a 300-slip facility hidden behind an 800-foot breakwater that can accommodate megayachts of over 200-feet, ideally located by the leafy campus housing the University of South Florida. Heading a little further afield you will discover the City of Gulfport Municipal Marina, a public marina in an artificial cove with 192 public wet-slips, perfect for runabouts exploring Boca Ciega Bay. For a more upscale experience head to the Pasadena Golf and Yacht Club, an 82-slip private marina with an preppy vibe and an attached golf course. As you head out to the barrier islands, sand banks and artificial islets that link St Petersburg to its coastal suburbs you will find dozens of smaller marinas, while private homes lining the shore here often boast their own private jetties.
There are plenty of races and regattas held here year-round, with the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club’s Commodore’s Cup among the more well-known. The bustling boating industry in Southwest Florida employs around 10,000 employees, with St Petersburg representing a significant portion of the broader area’s economic activity. Builders based here include Cayo Boatworks, manufacturers of fishing skiffs and Costa Custom Boats, who build fishing catamarans, while iconic brand Intrepid Powerboats build all their watercraft at a factory in nearby Largo.
