The Purple Isle is packed with marinas, slips and piers, with just about every other home on the water featuring direct access to the sea. Some of the largest facilities here include the Bud N’ Mary Fishing Marina, founded in 1944, which maintains a sizeable fishing fleet, charter boats and an authentic welcome, as well as Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina, an 83-slip facility and Treasure Harbor, a protected inlet with an attached resort. Other marinas popular with boaters and visitors include Robbie’s of Islamorada, famous for tarpon-feeding and scuba-diving, the 20-slip IslaMarina and Caloosa Cove Marina, a sizeable docking space with 30 wet-slips and 80 dry racks.
One of the larger facilities in the area sits just outside the Islamorada town limits in nearby Tavernier. This town’s Mangrove Marina impresses with 103 wet-slips, 96 dry-rack spaces and a picturesque setting shielded from the wind and the waves by natural mangrove forests. Islamorada is also a regular fixture on the racing and regatta calendar, with sailing, catamaran and powerboat events, like the Hobie Nationals Regatta or the Atlantic 100, often held here.
If you want to stow away your rods and indulge in leisure cruising then there are a range of popular destinations available to boaters here. Head to Indian Key Historic State Park, accessible only via boat, to explore an abandoned island littered with historic ruins. Alternatively, make a bee-line to the iconic Islamorada Sandbar, located one mile offshore. This unique attraction is formed by an isolated sand-bar that sits just inches beneath the crystal-clear waters, and is often thronged with boaters who come here to swim, relax and sunbathe in otherworldly surrounds. Also make sure to check out the Shell Key nature reserve, a nesting site for rare and tropical birds. Though it is illegal to land on the islets here, keen bird-watchers can paddle up close to the shore for a sight at white herons and Antillean nighthawks. If you prefer to stay on dry land then the stand-out attraction in town has to be the History of Diving Museum, an exhibition space dedicated to the art of underwater diving.
