Just steps away from downtown Daytona sits the huge Halifax Harbor Marina. With a prime position right on the Halifax River, a 550-slip, full-service facility and the ultimate pit-stop for boaters in Daytona Beach, this marina is part of a larger complex that includes the Freedom Boat Club Daytona Beach, the Daytona Beach Boat Club and the Marina Point Marina – which makes it one of the largest docking destinations in the state. Just north of downtown, meanwhile, you will discover the Loggerhead Marina and Coquina Marina, two linked facilities with a more laid-back, home-spun feel and perfectly located for voyages up to Tomoka State Park, a nature reserve famed for tropical foliage, exotic birds and migrating manatees. If you are more interested in heading out onto the Atlantic to fish for tuna and marlin, or to zip up past the beach, then you will have to chart a course about 8 miles south toward the Ponce de Leon inlet that leads into the ocean, where a range of smaller marinas and harbors await.
There’s a range of exhibitions, regattas and races held throughout the year in Daytona Beach, including the Halifax Summer Regatta. This annual event takes place on the Halifax River, has been running since the late 1990s and blends fun competitions for juniors with prestige races with significant prize pools. Also held in Daytona Beach is the Gulfstreamer Offshore Challenge, a challenging offshore sailing race that starts in Florida and heads all the way north to South Carolina. The city also hosts the annual Daytona Boat Show, a showcase event that attracts more than 55,000 visitors per year.
The recreational boating industry is worth more than $500 million dollars to Volusia County as a whole, supporting over 5,000 people and a diverse range of businesses like dock builders and small boat builders based here. The town of Edgewater to the immediate south of Daytona Beach, however, is known as a leading manufacturing hub, and is home to iconic firm Boston Whaler, the 18th biggest boat-building brand in the world by revenue, as well as Edgewater Power Boats, SOLACE Boats and Everglades Boats.
