There are 50,090 recreational boats registered in Lee County as a whole, with a significant portion based in Fort Myers, making it one of the leading areas for private boaters in the entire state, with a range of yachting facilities in and around the city.
The major docking spot here is the Fort Myers Yacht Basin, a large full-service facility right next to the buzz of Downtown, where you will find 241 wet-slips for yachts of up to 150-feet in length. Also in development is a brand-new facility at Legacy Harbour to replace the previous 131-slip marina destroyed by Hurricane Ian in 2022 with a state-of-the-art marina anchoring a mixed-use development with apartments, retail and restaurants. You’ll have to head beyond the immediate city limits of Fort Myers to find a wealth of other marinas nearby, including the Gulf Harbour Marina, a protected cove with 186 deep-water slips, and The Landings Marina at Picnic Point, where you will discover 192-slips and 60-dry storage spots in a resort-style setting with a hotel, golf course and tennis club among the facilities.
Heading further south in the direction of Fort Myers beach, an attractive seaside bolthole on a sandy island with a laid-back feel, you will encounter marinas like the St. Charles Yacht Club, the Sanibel Harbor Yacht Club, the Moss Marina and Salty Sam’s Marina, all of which specialize in offshore boaters and fishers heading out toward the deep waters of the Gulf as well as bay-boaters navigating down the Matanzas Pass toward the atmospheric and sultry Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve. From here you can also head out to Tarpon Bay, Pine Island Sound and the Matlacha Pass for cruising in the evocative shallows surrounded by mangrove forests, rare exotic birds and estuarine fish. If you prefer to head north along the languid Caloosahatchee River, which extends all the way to Lake Okeechobee and beyond, then dozens of private slips, jetties and public boat ramps line the backwaters, offering convenient access to this freshwater channel.
Central to the boating industry in the City of Palms is the Fort Myers Boat Show, a vibrant maritime showcase held in November each year since the 70s, which attracts over 20,000 visitors who come to check out up to 700 vessels from more than 130 different manufacturers. There’s also a home-grown boat-building industry based in and around the city, with popular brands based here including Poseidon 2 Boats, Latitude Boatworks, Apache Powerboats and Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats.
