Central to the Sunrise City’s appeal is fishing, with a good blend of freshwater and saltwater angling on offer. Year-round scouting for redfish, speckled trout, snook and black drum on the vast inshore estuaries, inlets and backwaters that surround the city are popular options for those who like to stick closer to dry land, while hardy fishers who prefer to head out into the deep can pursue good stocks of tuna, wahoo and one of the world’s densest populations of sailfish. Keen bird-watchers can also catch a glimpse of some rare species, including bald eagles, great blue herons and purple gallinules, on the mangrove islands that line the waterways here, while in the winter you’ll be sharing the water with migrating manatees. There’s also a busy calendar of races and regattas held in Fort Piece, including the Fort Piece Ocean Race, the Florida State Outrigger Regatta and Project LIFT’s Great American Raft Race.
There are 22 marinas in and around Fort Pierce, with the largest public facility the Fort Pierce City Marina, a 135-slip destination for boats up to 250-feet in length surrounded by a breakwater and located mere steps away from Downtown. Head across the Fort Pierce South Bridge to Causeway Island where you will find five more marinas with direct access onto the Atlantic, including the 198-slip Causeway Cove Marina, the Fort Pierce Inlet Marina and the Pelican Yacht Club. The biggest marina in the area, the Safe Harbor Harbortown, sits just north of Downtown. Here you will find 259 slips, full-service facilities, the Carefree Boat Club and on-site destination eatery the Skipper’s Cove Bar & Grill.
Boating across the wider Treasure Coast region is worth over $1.3 billion dollars, supporting over 7,000 jobs, with Fort Pierce one of the most important industry hubs in the area. The bustling recreational boating sector in Fort Pierce is anchored by the Maverick Boat Group, owner of brands including Cobia, Pathfinder and Hewes, who have their headquarters in the city. Other big names in the boat-building sector based here include center-console builders Bluewater Boats, sportfisher manufacturer Pursuit Boats and makers of high-speed fishing catamarans Twin Vee boats, as well as plenty of others. Yacht-building giant Derecktor Shipyards, builders of some of the world’s most exclusive and most expensive megayachts, also operates a major manufacturing plant near the Downtown area of the city.
