Miami is one of the world’s most popular yachting cities, a place where glitz and glamour mix with a breezy, laid-back approach to life on the water and a boating culture that soaks up the city’s distinctly Latin flair. Florida’s largest city is home to 74,662 registered vessels at the last count, the largest such total by municipal area in the state, while the Gateway to the Americas also stands as a hub for the yacht industry, hosting a world-class selection of boating events, companies and facilities.
A clue to the city’s success lies in its geography. A sultry, sub-tropical climate, 35 miles of seafront beach and direct access to the ocean allow boaters to hit the Atlantic and ride the Gulf Stream all the way to the Bahamas, located just 97 miles away at its closest point. While enjoying the salty air offshore drop a line to fish for tuna, mahi-mahi and kingfish or compete in the many angling contests, like the Yamaha Contender Billfish Tournament, held here regularly. Alternatively, tap into the Florida Intracoastal System, a vast network of backwaters perfect for casual boaters that extends 1,088 miles all the way to the Georgia border and beyond. At the heart of the city lies Biscayne Bay, the place for boaters to see and be seen as they glide past a selection of modern towers soaring above the Downtown district, while boating with the jet-set can be found by Miami Beach and South Beach, salubrious enclaves with sugar-white sands, Art Deco architecture and swaying palms. Miami is also ideally positioned for boating excursions to the iconic Everglades National Park, an atmospheric mangrove-thronged wilderness, much of which sits within the Miami-Dade county borders.
This city is home to some of Florida’s premier marinas, including the 587-slip Dinner Key Marina in high-end Coconut Grove, the largest facility on Florida’s Atlantic coastline, where superyachts up to 135-feet can be accommodated. Just next door you will also find the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, a mainstay of the upper-crust boating scene in Miami since it was founded all the way back in 1887. If you are rocking a megayacht then head to Miami Beach Marina, a 400-slip facility steps away from the action, where yachts up to 250-feet in length can dock, or Epic Marina, a 135-slip docking space that also welcomes the world’s largest yachts. If you want to combine shopping, restaurant visits and cultural excursions with your boating trip then check out the 125-slip Miamarina at Bayside, where full-service facilities sit alongside a vibrant mall, the Skyviews Ferris wheel and the Kaseya Center, home to the NBA’s Miami Heat team. Miami’s largest public marina, meanwhile, is the Black Point Park & Marina to the south of the city, where 200-slips, a convivial vibe and ocean access await. In total this city can boast over 1,300 marinas, ranging from state-of-the-art docks for your floating palace to modest jetties and casual boat-ramps ready to welcome your pontoon or bay boat.
The Magic City has a boating industry anchored by the world-famous Miami International Boat Show, an annual event that draws up to 100,000 attendees and generates more than $955 million dollars in economic impact for the city. Yet yachting here remains big business all year-round, with Miami taking a huge slice of the $31.3 billion dollars associated, both directly and indirectly, with recreational boating across Florida. A major hub for the yacht-building sector, Miami is home to a slew of America’s most well-known builders, with up to 42 different manufacturers based here. Located in Homestead, Contender Boats have been building semi-custom sportfishers for over 40 years, while Invincible Boats construct high-end, offshore center-consoles from a factory in Opa-Locka. In the Hialeah area there are a pair of boat builders, Dynamic Boats and Limitless Boats, both of which specialize in developing high-speed, outboard-powered center-consoles.
