Sailors, too, will pick up the breeze and drift across the bay, sharing the space with not only container vessels and cruise ships but with migrating manatees and feeding dolphins, too. And with offshore fishing for mahi-mahi and blue marlin on the Gulf not far away, it’s easy to see why the Big Guava is known as one of the top boating destinations in the United States. The Sun Coast city of Tampa boasts a plethora of full-service marinas for boats of all sizes, while after you’re done yachting you can check out its vibrant and historic urban heart, where iconic attractions and museums jostle for attention with post-modern skyscrapers and some of the area’s finest dining venues.
The waters around Downtown Tampa are largely prioritized for the docking cruise ships that visit this warm city year-round, but there are a range of smaller marinas, private boat-slips and jetties dotting this area, such as the floating marinas lining the Riverwalk right by the Convention Center or those found on Harbour Island. Cast your net a little further south to find the illustrious Tampa Bay Yacht & Country Club in Ballast Point, an exclusive marina with 81 wet slips and 60 dry storage spaces. Alternatively, check out the Davis Island Yacht Club, a private marina in a large sheltered cove that offers 135-slips and plenty of room to anchor your boat. Heading west toward Old Tampa Bay there’s also the Westshore Yacht Club Marina, one of the biggest facilities in the area with 147 wet-slips for yachts up to 150-feet in length. Moving out of the Cigar City to explore the eastern reaches of the bay you will find Little Harbor Marinas, two linked complexes with up to 135-slips and plentiful dry storage space, perfectly positioned for boating trips in the south of the bay and out toward the mysterious and windswept Egmont Key. Land’s End Marina in Apollo Beach, meanwhile, has 105 slips not far from Beer Can Island, a popular destination with a beach-front Tiki bar much-loved by party-goers.
There were 41,495 registered boats in Hillsborough County at the last count, the fifth highest such total in the entire state, and residents here like to participate in the many races and regattas held on Tampa Bay itself. Events like the Tampa Bay to Naples Race, the J/24 Rodeo, the Tampa Bay Poker Run and the storied Gasparilla Regatta, a sailing event now into its sixth decade, are all organized and held in or near the city. There’s a vibrant boating industry here, too, with iconic firms like Sheaffer Marine, Gulf Crosser Yachts and legendary yacht-building brand Bertram Yachts all based in Tampa.
