Explore Sarasota Bay, a natural inlet lined by atmospheric strands and wild estuaries that is home is dozens of small islands and archipelagos, head offshore to fish for mahi-mahi in the Gulf, or take it easy by bay-boating to the dozens of marinas peppered throughout the area. Sarasota also a vibrant, home-grown yachting scene, with 23,438 boats registered to residents of Sarasota County at the last count, and a bustling maritime sector whose roots go back to the 19th century.
The most popular marina in this city is the vibrant Marina Jack harbor, located right by Downtown, where full-service facilities, a welcoming atmosphere, 305 wet-slips and a range of bars and restaurants await. From here you can enjoy Sarasota Bay to its fullest, and after you’re done cruising you can explore the beautiful surrounds and exciting cultural offerings Sarasota has to offer. Also flanking Downtown is the large marina attached to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, a facility that is due to be rebuilt over the coming years as part of a major city redevelopment.
A little further north you will find the Sara Bay Marina, an affordable option with 60 slips for boats up to 50-feet in length, while in the southern suburbs of Sarasota there is the 135-slip Field Club, a flagstone of the upper-crust boating scene here since it was founded by members of the Field retail dynasty in 1957. Head across the Ringling Bridge to find the Sarasota Yacht Club, an island marina with 120-slips in a genteel, exclusive setting, the more intimate 48-slip Bird Key Yacht Club and, for those who prefer a more rugged, hands-on adventure, the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, whose marina on City Island is the starting point for many wind-driven trips offshore. One of the largest marinas in the area, however is the Longboat Key Club Moorings, where 291 storm-proofed deepwater yacht slips are surrounded by a resort with a golf club just steps away from some of the Gulf Coast’s finest beaches.
Sarasota is also a capital for racing and regattas, with popular tournaments regularly held here like the Sarasota Invitational Regatta, the Benderson Chase and sailing showcase the Sarasota Bay Multihull Regatta. The Suncoast Boat show, now into its 43rd year, is held in the city every April, attracting more than 20,000 visitors who come to check out displays from up to 150 different brands. There’s a booming boating industry in this part of the world, with yacht sales across both Sarasota and neighboring Manatee counties hitting as much as $731 billion dollars in 2020 alone. Yacht-builders based here include the legendary Chris-Craft, one of America’s leading brands since 1874 and famous for providing vessels to hit show Miami Vice during the ‘80s, as well as Barker Boatworks, Andros Boatworks, Calcutta Marina and Michael Peters Yacht Design, the critically-acclaimed yacht design firm.
