Superb access out onto the windswept waters of the Atlantic make Stuart the perfect place to head out to sea and land your choice of sailfish, marlin, redfish, grouper or tarpon, particularly during the recognized fishing season between October and May. Set off from Riverwatch Marina, a huge facility with a combined 373 dry and wet slips, for superb inshore fishing down the St Lucie River and the Jensen Beach Aquatic Preserve, with the St Lucie River Inlet onto the open ocean just minutes away.
The 198-slip Sunset Bay Marina & Anchorage, meanwhile, puts boaters within walking distance of Downtown, where you can secure your rods, tackle and bait from the wide variety of fishing vendors located there. Cross the Dixie Highway Bridge to North River Shores to find the Harborage Yacht Club, a full-service, on-the-water facility which boasts 135 slips for vessels up to 250-feet in length. The docking facilities closest to the Atlantic are to be found in the Manatee Pocket to the east of Downtown, where half a dozen marinas, each with their own flavor, await. Of particular note here is Pirate’s Cove, a characterful resort and marina with a buccaneer spirit that hosts the largest active fishing fleet on Florida’s Treasure Coast.
Stuart also excels when it comes to competitive fishing, which a full calendar of contests and tournaments held all-year round. Check out the Pirate’s Cove Sailfish Classic, usually held in December, which is now into its 38th year, or participate in the Stuart Sailfish Club’s Annual Ladies Tournament, typically held in September, which has been going for almost 40 years. Another big date for this charming city is the Stuart Boat Show, scheduled for mid-January each year, which attracts more than 205 exhibitors specializing in fishing boats, gear and electronics.
Builders in Stuart have been constructing vessels for well over a century, and there are dozens of marine firms and boat builders still located in the city to this day. There are almost too many boat-building brands to mention in Stuart, but among the most notable include Whiticar Boat Works, a firm that have been building rugged sportfishing yachts with a competitive edge since 1938, and Kadey-Krogen Yachts, a brand founded in 1977 that have perfected ocean-going fishing trawlers. Also operating from Stuart are Gamefisherman Yachts, builders of mid-sized classic sportfishers, bay-boats and flybridge yachts, Jim Smith Boats, who have been building cold-molded, tournament-ready sportfishers since 1959, and Willis Yachts, bluewater sportfisher specialists since the 80s. Along with the boat factories this city also hosts the headquarters for Rupp Marine, the iconic maker of outriggers and fishing hardware, whose goods are considered best-in-class around the world.
