Known as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” Destin boasts the largest and best-equipped fishing fleet in the state. Although the town is an ideal destination for anglers, it also offers an rich array of watersports and other recreational activities such as diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing and more.
Launching your boat in Destin couldn’t be easier, with a range of boat ramps at reasonable prices. While all of Destin’s bayous are worth exploring, Joe’s Bayou is the largest and deepest. One of the best waterfront locations in the area, it offers five boat launch ramps for a daily $25 cash fee in addition to a number of private docks. Destin Marina is another great choice, providing access to Crab Island and other destinations for a $20 fee. A lesser-known option is Liza Jackson Park, where you’ll not only find a free-to-use boat launch ramp but a fishing pier, park benches, and public restrooms.
Once you’ve launched your boat, head over to one of Destin’s most sought-after locations, Crab Island. A local hot-spot known for its lively, sociable atmosphere, this massive sandbar is always abuzz with pontoon boats, jet-skis, waverunners and other vessels and toys, but never feels crowded. As its name suggests, the island is also home to a variety of crab species and other wildlife, from sea urchins to dolphins.
Those looking for a more relaxed pace should check out Norriego Point. Often overlooked by tourists, this breathtaking peninsula on Holiday Isle is a local secret that lies between Destin Harbor to the north and East Pass to the south. A public beach with white sand and tranquil waters, Norriego Point is the perfect spot to drop anchor and enjoy scenic views. The Point’s shallow, crystalline tidepools are great for young swimmers and snorkelers; these biodiverse spots are also exceptional for spotting wildlife like starfish and hermit crabs. Once you’ve explored the peninsula, head across the water to the Destin Harbor Boardwalk and indulge in top-notch shellfish and seafood at one of many nearby oyster bars.
For even more unspoiled beauty, steer for the sublime Gulf Islands National Seashore. Spanning Florida and Mississippi, the Okaloosa County and Santa Rosa Island locations along this picturesque stretch of coastline are particularly gorgeous. Far from the other Gulf Island locations, Okaloosa is nestled between Destin and Fort Walton. Visitors can walk along bone-white beaches and marvel at the scenery, indulge in a bit of fishing, embark on kayaking excursions, or even join a volleyball game at one of the many public nets available. Go a bit further east and you’ll reach the serene shores of Santa Rosa Island, a 40-mile sandbar with white quartz beaches and turquoise waters that would not look out of place in the Caribbean.
