Perfect for upscale cruisers, this salubrious city is a major pit-stop for those exploring the Florida coast, heading down to the Caribbean or zipping across to the Bahamas, with at least 2,000 superyachts of at least 80-feet in length known to dock here each year. But there’s also around 50,000 boats registered to residents in Broward, Fort Lauderdale’s home county, with popular activities including offshore fishing for tuna and mahi-mahi, backwater day-boating in style and enjoying the regular regattas and racing events held here, such as the Boomerang Regatta or the iconic Lauderdale to Key West sailing race.
There are over 100 marinas located in the city, including some of the largest, most state-of-the-art venues in the country, as well as thousands of smaller private jetties, boat-ramps and slips. The premier marina here has to be the Bahia Mar Yachting Center, where 250-slips capable of hosting the world’s biggest megayachts sit side-by-side with pools, beaches, restaurants and one of the city’s landmark hotels. Elsewhere in Fort Lauderdale there is the Yacht Haven Park and Marina, a 135-slip marina in a landscaped setting with swaying palms and manicured lawns, as well as the 135-slip, full-service Sage Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, an expansive complex set in 65-acres of lush waterfront land.
Combine your boating experience with a resort stay at Pier Sixty-Six, a glamorous facility with 5,000-feet of linear dock space, 164 slips and an attached deluxe spa and hotel retreat perfect for pampering. For a cutting-edge experience head to the brand-new Las Olas Marina, a stylish destination with 68 berths and 6889-feet of linear dock space, flanked by funky, post-modern architecture. Central to the city’s yachting scene since 1938 is the upper-crust Lauderdale Yacht Club, an exclusive destination on the Stranahan River that hosts a busy schedule of sailing events and race.
The marine industry and associated activity is worth around $9.7 billion a year to Fort Lauderdale, making it the area’s second largest sector behind tourism. Central to the boating economy here is the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, known as FLIBS to industry-insiders. This is the biggest on-the-water boat show in the world, attracting well over 100,000 visitors a year who come to inspect more than 1,300 display vessels from builders in 52 countries across a 90-acre site. Some of the nation’s biggest yacht-building firms have their operations in this city, making Fort Lauderdale a hive of marine activity. Premier brands include Lazzara Yachts, who have been making luxury motor yachts since 1955, and Westport Yachts, builders of some of America’s largest and most luxurious flybridge yachts since 1964. Other companies with an international following include Hargrave Custom Yachts, builders to the super-rich, and Intrepid Powerboats.
